IBIZA PUBLIC LIBRARY
Inaugurated on November 7, 1988, the first municipal public library was installed in the municipal building of Calle Castilla, no. 19. The Ibiza Public Library is the result of the merger of this first library and the old library of La Caixa, and was inaugurated on May 12, 1995, with an initial fund of 40,000 volumes.
With almost 700 square meters, the architectural conception of the library allows an excellent use of natural light. The distribution of the space offers the independence of the sections with the location of the volumes at different levels.
On the ground floor, there is a newspaper library and loan service. At a lower level, the children’s and youth sections, the local section of the Pitiüses, the audio-visual collection, and two Internet access points. The Ibiza Public Library also has a deposit (restricted access) and a space for children, the Bebeteca, (opened in 2001), aimed at children from 0 to 6 years, as well as being a site for the realization of various activities for the promotion of reading.
Access to the upper floor is through a ramp where the reference works or general reference works (encyclopedias, dictionaries, yearbooks, atlases, etc.) that leads to the adult room are located. On the first floor, there is also the Marià Villangómez room, dedicated to literature and the local section of the Balearic Islands. The conferences, poetic recitals, book presentations and other events are usually held in the Marià Villangómez room (inaugurated in 2006).
